How to Listen to Your Internal Compass
What is your internal compass trying to communicate?
What’s amazing about being a human is that we have an internal compass inside of us that reminds us when we our veering off our path, or needing to make a decision in a new direction.
Your internal compass, also known as your intuition/higher self/subconscious is always present, but often our minds are on overload [rushing to catch the train, cleaning out the closet, making birthday plans, choosing a school for your kids, planning dates, paying bills] that it’s hard to feel and know what we really need and want in life.
Listening to yourself is what often leads to a happier and more fulfilled life. But of course, that’s easier said than done. Logically and rationally there are things we have to do in life that go against our highest self…but at what cost? At what point do you decide that you need to listen to yourself, even if it makes you uproot where you are at?
Usually when the guide of your compass becomes too clear or painful to ignore.
This happens when you have nudges or urges that become too loud and clear. These are a nudge or urge to do something, to make a decision, sometimes as big as leaving a relationship, a job, sign up for a class, book a trip, buy a pet, etc…
My most recent nudge came in the form of completely uprooting my life in Australia (I’ll save this for another post). If someone would have told me a year ago that I would be living in Brooklyn today, I would have laughed in their face. NYC has never, ever, been on my radar, and all of my closest and oldest friends could probably attest to that. If you’re surprised, trust me, so am I.
But my internal guidance system directed me here. And it got to the point where I couldn’t ignore those nudges. I do believe we have control with many things in life...and yes, to get all woowoo on you, there also exists a current as well, pulling us in some direction or down a path, that is beyond our control. Sometimes our subconscious is trying to tell you something, show you that your goals and desires have changed...and that you need to pay attention. This often happens quicker than our minds can understand -- so you often start to feel these nudges in your body. And they can come at different stages in our lives. What we never considered at one point, is the thing that our guidance system is nudging us towards.
What do nudges come in the form of?
Reoccurring thoughts, visions, fantasies, dreams.
Synchronicities, such as events or moments that seem coincidental or pattern driven, related to something you want or desire.
Internal conflict, which is having parts of you divided and battling against one another over a decision. Typically one is holding onto comfort/stability and one is trying to shake things up.
Illness, sickness, feeling like you’re not living your best life.
Anxiety. Which can be a sign or signal that things are off alignment and you need to listen to yourself.
Feeling complete joy about something that you speak about often or even something that you have buried, like a vision that seems unrealistic.
Feeling contracted, or that awful gut feeling about something.
Just a feeling that you need a change or that you’re stuck.
Those nudges are your inner compass trying to guide you towards unexplored territory but also to more alignment. What are your urges and nudges? What do you need? Where did you want to be? Who do you want to be with?
Take some time. Sit in silence. If you can, try and get out of your head. Move your body. Get off Instagram ;). You need to start spending time alone, quietening your mind. It could seem scary AF if your compass is telling you to make a change or break up any stability you're holding onto. You don’t have to make changes right away but start to listen.
Ultimately, it will be almost impossible to fight the current if you resist what or where calls to you. Trust me. Listen closely. Remember it’s okay to change what you want or where you want to be. Cause you're going one way... and that's forward.
