What does effective coaching look like?
Where do you turn when you need help in life or have a decision to make?
A good friend? A family member? A coach?!
There is still a lot of misconception and mystery around coaching because it’s not as widespread in the mainstream for individuals and organizations. It’s allusive for many.
“How does it differ from therapy or mentorship? How does it really help? It is a bunch of fluff?”
If you ever wanted to really know what coaching is about, check out this 30 min. Harvard Business Review podcast where Professor Richard Boyatzis, who studies the efficacy of coaching and believes people really change and grow when they work with an effective coach -- speaks about coaching for individuals and within the workplace. It’s 30 minutes well spent if you want to understand why I am so passionate about this profession and also learn how it could potentially help you now or in the future. I truly believe coaching will be in the forefront of conversations about improving our personal and professional lives over the next five years.
I love when he speaks about creating cultures of development at organizations and why it’s so critical. Leaders and managers are often afraid of what their teams really want and desire, but shouldn’t they know??! Don’t organizations benefit from having employees who want to grow within the company rather than plotting their exodus? (link: https://hbr.org/ideacast/…/09/what-great-coaching-looks-like). Employee coaching helps leaders and managers understand what their employees really need, want, and desire, which is a benefit to the bottom line. Personal coaching helps you up-level your life (improve your self-image, your relationships, your confidence, your energy…), overcome any barriers or obstacles, and achieve certain goals.
The podcast does a great job at explaining what research says about effective coaching.
What makes an effective coach?
+ Helps you know what you want and desire in life
+ Gives you information in doses
+ Recognizes the best in you
+ Coaches with compassion
+ Understands you holistically and within a bigger picture
+ Encourages you to sort out your personal vision and dreams
Richard believes 1:1 coaching is more effective than group trainings and formal educational programs for people and leaders to develop long-term. Many people avoid 1:1 help because it's confronting...but If you're open to it, it can be extremely life-changing...literally.
